My R1 has a 'Magnetic Levitation Switch', that allows tie down free towing.....

Seriously though....I have used Ancras to tie down cars and bikes for thousands of miles without a failure.....something is fooked here....

I made that up.
Ancra calls them 'cam buckles.'

You do this while hauling the bike on a trailer? *Is there some sort of wheel lock in addition to the normal compression fit/lock of the Baxley chock?

I would think you'd want at least something up high on the bike, to counter the left/right movement of the bike. *Seems like an awful lot of lateral stress could be placed on the forks if you had to swerve quickly.
I have it mounted in a van, but it would be no different in a trailer. I use the cam-buckle type on the rear, but have no tie downs on the front.
I get the two rear tie-downs just tight enough to stop the lateral swaying.
Loading is a breeze, too.

How old were these Ancra tie downs? *I have seen them get thin after a year or 2 and fray. *When they get thin, the nubs on the cam no longer grasp the strap very well. *I keep mine for 2 seasons tops then then use them for holding doors open and what not . . .

Do I see ratcheting ones in figment's future then??

I have always preferred them, they DON'T slip at all... The straps themselves may stretch and settle, but its not due to slippage at the buckle. I got tired of checking them every so many miles too... That makes tow time seem much much longer on a long trip...

the problem with the ratcheting type is that if you have a lot of compression or travel, the take-up can bind due to clearance in the spool. So you need some 'mojo' to get all the slack you can out before you start to ratchet. The other type tiedowns can be used to do this and then you just use the ratchets to lock it up.

AND as previously stated, they are kinda hard to undo...so the cam type can be used to help release them by taking the strain off of them at unload time.

Hard to undo is fine with me, I don't want them to let go! I've never had an incident with a ratchet style, the cam buckles almost lost my 929 though... Scared the crap out of me, crappy NC roads and ALL 4 loosened in about 1/4 of a mile.

To release a ratchet style, just open in all the way, push down on the lever (that holds the ratchet part of the buckle) and apply pressure to the ratchet, it will release tension...

That's weird to hear of so many tie down incidents....knock on wood, I've never had one....

Just out of curiosity, were all the tie downs forward.....or 2 up 2 back....???

Re: Ancra ties cost me $$$$

Personally, I use a cheap set of cam buckle straps. I tie the loose end in a knot around the tension end wedged right under the buckle. No problems yet.

This month's Sport Rider has a review of tie-downs in case you're interested.

Wierd, Ive been using Ancras for 20 years and never a problem. I refuse to use anything other, my 'cheapies' (bought in desperation when 3 motorcycles and a bunch of parts unexpectantly followed me home one day) just hold my fuel jugs and ramps in my truck bed.

all forward.
Freaky....

FWIW, I only use the cam straps on the bike....I have a few ratchets, but only use them for moving furniture and the like....

I use the sport chock, too; but, I still use tie downs. I've had a tie down come extremely loose and the sport chock held the bike in place.

I HIGHTLY recomend the sport chock for strapping down a bike yourself or for trackdays. It's also pretty handy for getting your bike on a swingarm stand.

The only bad thing about the sport chock is the pile of evangalistic literature...
