U-Haul trailer

I couldn't find it (maybe the thread is too old), but someone had mentioned in the past about renting a U-Haul trailer and "temporarily modifying" it to haul a bike. What did you do besides putting eyebolts or something in the floor, or maybe a chock? And did the U-Haul place really not notice a couple of bolt holes in the floor?

They rent motorcycle trailers.

My experience with UHaul is that if it is back in the lot without visible damage, then they haven't said anything ... but I haven't drilled holes in a trailer either. You can always get corks or dowls to drive into the holes and pretend you know nothing.

Another option is what I do with my open utility trailer and did with my old pickup. Cut a sheet of plywood to fit, mount the chock(s) to this, and add a 2x4 (or couple of 2x4s to make an L bracket) to reinforce the front and put the eyelets through. This way the board and chocks come out and get stored in the garage when not in use. Be sure to reinforce the bolt heads going through the plywood so they don't pull through; typcially I double up the boards (e.g. mount chock on top of a 2x12 that is securely screwed to the plywood). The front tire sits a little higher, but no worries of pulled out bolts and nothing protruding out the bottom to scratch the floor.

Just an option.

This is correct, $15.00 a day, I rented a Uhaul for years before I got my trailer.

ST - I rented a UHaul 5x8 enclosed to tow my F4 from NC to CT several years ago. There were tie-down rings bolted to the front exterior of the trailer (why, I don't know). The bolts went through the enclosure so I just unbolted them, flipped them around to where they were on the inside and tied away. No problems for the 800 mile trip.

If I remember correctly, however, the bolt holding it on was a Torx type, not phillips or hex-head.

I chose the enclosed over the motorcycle trailer since I was covering a long distance and wanted to keep the bike out of any potential weather.

Thanks. I may go with the motorcycle trailer for ease of use if I can even get one locally, but I would feel better about an enclosed trailer since we're getting rained on all week.

I ended up using their motorcycle trailer; can't beat $15 a day.

I'm not. I had to go get a bike 300 miles away and the forecast (which turned out to be correct) was cold and rainy.

No man, you didn't miss anything; I just kept it hush-hush since the new scoot is a cruiser. I kept it in the Honda family, though. It's a VTX 1300C.

Thanks Conq. I've been there for several weeks now. Like this site, the folks over there are bad influences when it comes to spending $$$ on bikes.
