Best advice is to buy any helmet new. Helmets are meant to only be used for one fall. The foam inside acts as the cushion to help in a fall. Once it is compressed, that's it. It doesn't go back to original shape. Many helmets (which have both dot and snell approval) can be purchased for around $120 usd.

Not to mention, do you want a helmet that someone has sweat in, sneezed, cough and who knows what else? For all you know, they had a bad case of lice.
