Here is full of crazy (stupid) guys who ride with shorts, flip-flops, T-shirts and no helmets. Really, they are so many! I think they take their bikes only to go to a cafe and to be seen but still they could put some clothes on. If leather is too much for them, yes, jeans would do. The most interesting is that they ride thoughtlessly, even try to do some stunts. It really frightens me. Don't they esteem their life?

Re: Do Jeans Help?

I live in Panama City, Panama where its usually around 90 degrees F and 75% (or more) humidity; for everyday I wear jeans and a mesh jacket and gloves. Leathers for fast Sunday riding, I may not be the best looking guy in the bunch, but I like my skin in one piece....

Re: Do Jeans Help?

You know, it just occurred to me; "I wonder if all the guys on HD forums sit around and consider this topic?". Then I wondered; "how many of them can read and type?". Sorry, couldn't resist on that one...

Seriously, some of this sensitivity to wearing protective gear is very culturally driven. There is a culture within the SBK community and there is a different culture in the "Chrome" community. Not sure what that means exactly, but it's something to make you go "hmm".

Re: Do Jeans Help?

The "Chromies" live by the creed, 'Ride Free or Die', so helmets and protective gear are irrelevent in their black and chrome world...

Re: Do Jeans Help?

Ill chime in with a different attitude...

I have on occasions ridden in shorts after playing beach volleyball on a hot day. Yes I know its a risk and not as safe as jeans and definitely not as safe as leather. Funny thing is I will still wear my leather jacket and gloves!
Its only ever been on commutes in suburban areas. Wouldnt go at freeway or back road speed like that.

But - I have found that in real hot weather jeans are better than shorts. The last two times Ive worn shorts was because it was very hot and after about 15 mins I found my legs were getting burnt from hot air going past them - they were going red. Both times I stopped and put my jeans on and it felt better.
Yes - "reverse wind chill" from the hot air!

So it is possible to be hot enough that jeans are better than shorts!

Ive also found that in similar conditions its better to zip the jacket up than to have the zip open - again to stop reverse wind chill.

I will chime in on the draggin jeans. Normally wear full leathers when I ride, but if it is an easy ride and very hot will wear my draggin jeans with the rest of my gear.

I went down at 100 MPH in my jeans on 9-22 of this year, first initial impact to the road was with my left knee as someone stated draggin jeans blew apart like a wet napkin, injury suffered open wound fracture to my tibia, road rash was minimal .Right knee 2 road rash spots about the size of a quarter. No other road rash to my lower body after a 200 foot slide and tumble down the highway. I have already bought a new pair of draggin jeans this time with the knee armor.
