If I sit the bag on as recommended for solo travel (ie on the pillion seat) I can fit a tent, sleeping bag and camp stretcher on the rack and all my gear in the bag. This is enough to go touring for a week. There are a couple of minor issues. First the bag is not waterproof but you can just line it with a garbage bag so no worries there. The other thing is that it is not easy to completely remove the rack so if you don't want the tubes sticking up like cookie cutters at track days or just for a Sunday fang you need to fit a grab handle in the rack which means the clean lines are a little mucked up. See the link in my sig. I've toyed with the idea of the Oxford humpback but it has nowhere near the carrying capacity of the Ventura.
Looks good to bad we can't see it in person at Grattan

Yeah Grattan sounds like a blast. What happens exactly? Does Fireblades.org book out the track for a couple of days run its own sessions? Either way its academic for me

Two bolts and the L brackets are off, just leaving the crosspiece, which is barely visible on my 929. If you're talking about just the rack part, I see what you mean. You have to give it some good smacks to get it out of the tubes. When I'm touring, I manage take it off once I've reached my destination and leave the tubes there with no grab handle in them. I don't bother taking the L brackets off unless I'm going to the track. I also have the shorter sport rack, which is great for day trips.

Ventura now makes storm covers for their luggage. Supposed to be completely waterproof, although I haven't been stuck in enough rain to really find out. I pack my stuff in plastic bags, too.

Thanks for that HGT. I've never actually tried to take the L brackets off because the stealer who fitted them said they took a long time to fit. Maybe most of that was putting the crosspiece in. On the 954 the indicators are relocated to fit on new mounts located on the ends of the crosspiece so it may be a bit a little different to the 929.

Here's a tip to make taking the rack out easier. Put a smear of spline lube or bearing grease round the bottom of the rack tubes next time you fit it. And permanently bend the L brackets in or out slightly so that they are the right distance apart and you don't have to force them apart or closer together to fit the L brackets.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try not to get grease all over my clothes! I kind of pull the L brackets apart, I'll look into bending them a bit.

Yes, the initial install of the crosspiece was a real PITA, on both the 929 and 954. For starters, the bodywork had to come off, the entire bodywork that covers the subframe. Then, after installing the crosspiece, the holes didn't line up right to attach the L brackets. It took quite a bit of bending, cursing and fiddling to get it right. I had to bend and tweek the crosspiece, then put the bodywork back on. Once everything was in the right spot and tightened down, removing only the L brackets isn't a big deal. It was yet another one of those jobs you think will take an hour and it turns into an all day project.

That wasn't anything like what I've experienced . I thought they were pretty easy to install on my 929. But I don't consider taking the tail plastic off a PITA.

I've installed the Ventura system on 3 bikes (2 929s and an SV650) and they bolted up no problems or bending. The trick is to leave everything loose until after the rack is installed in the L-brackets.

Yup, I left everything loose until all parts were fitted to the bike. The bolt that goes through the rear of the L bracket and screws into the crosspiece just wouldn't line up correctly. The crosspiece didn't have a lot of "play" in it, hence the bending to get it in the correct spot. That was after I had to return the first crosspiece, as the threads weren't put in. It's all good now, though.

My Eclipse magnetic tank bag holds quite well through the plastic tank cover. The metal tank itself is close enough and has enough mass to hold it. I don't even use the lanyard.

I took the L brackets off the 954 last night just for fun. Then I put em back on again (I gotta get a life ). It was easy peasy and I'd guess took around 5 minutes each way. Next track day that's what I'll do. Thanks again HGT
