Mac VS PC - I'm making the switch soon.

I've had more than enough of Windows and all the updates and bugs and security issues. After speaking to quite a few people about the whole Mac VS PC deal I am going to buy one for myself. From what I understand they do a lot of things a lot better than PC and don't pickup as much spyware/malware etc along the way. I spent some time on one recently and all I can say is that I was blown away with it. Almost like my first time on a Honda, it certainly had a quality feel.

Any thoughts?

You can't go wrong. The hardware is better and the OS is made for the hardware. In the PC world, if they can save $.01 they will make a new chip and custom write a driver for it, but the problem is that the driver is poorly coded and causes issues. It is all about making something for the least cost.

You've just put another nail in the PC coffin, I've spent way too many hours over the last month chasing bugs out of this hardware. There must be so much money in writing up spyware code, infecting the world with your bugs then selling the cure.. I will always have a PC but all of my day to day stuff is going to the Mac.

Have you considered keeping the PC but changing from Windows to, say, the latest Ubuntu version of Linux?

No, I'm sold on the Mac. We still have a few PC's left on the network so that might be an option in the future - might.

Re: Mac VS PC - I'm making the switch soon.

I used to run my Laptop (With Windows XP Pro) side by side against a Mac G5...

I used to find the Mac a lot faster and in some ways easier to use, but as I was used to Windows XP it was a little tricky to get used to all of the functions. (I mainly used the Mac for Music/Videos and my Laptop for Work/MSN/etc)

I then upgraded to a Desktop with Windows Vista... Honestly they have stepped up quite a bit, I now don't get as much Spyware and Bugs etc, it is easier to navigate around as the GUI* has become more user friendly when compared to Windows XP and as I have got used to it over time, it seems a lot easier to use.

The only downside I found with a Mac is that it never really liked games...

Vista sucks, WinXP works just fine, I never tried Mac and don't think I will in the near future.

At home I run Linux and love it. Small, compact, fast, easy, love to program my own stuff. Windows isn't even a close match.

I have tried 'doz, UNIX and Mac (various versions of all). I use Macs at home and get paid to use UNIX and 'doz. Oh and OS X IS certified UNIX.

Two comments .OrgOwner
1) try it out at a Mac store if you can. They encourage it and even offer some free classes
2) there is a Mac show on the 6th of January that frequently has new models announced. The mini, iMac and MacPro are due for updates so I would wait if you are looking desktop if possible. The laptops are fairly recently updated so it is less likely.

Oh and I have a MacPro at the house and that things STILL impresses me. I can remember using 1/2 million dollar UNIX boxes that were lesser (yes I know dinosheep stories ) It runs 'doz or various Linii (I use them for embedded stuff) in VMWare and just works. If you have questions or are looking for feedback post up or PM me and I will be happy to help if I can.

Ooops one last thing. DON'T buy RAM from Apple it is $$$$$$$$$ and do upgrade to 2GB as the speed difference is huge vs 1GB (they should quit shipping with 1GB)

Can't comment on Linux as I have never used it.

XP works fine but if you get used to Vista, i'm sure you would like it.

There are Pros and Cons to everything...

Mac O/S is Unix (Free BSD) way down deep - it's not so much the O/S is made for the hardware as Apple does the best job integrating the Unix-based O/S to the H/W (which one of the reasons it's a bit more difficult to strap on your own hardware components to a Mac - if it's not qualified, it might not run). They add stuff to help manage the config in a seamless fashion - something you don't get with Linux (or other desktop *nix systems).

So, if you've been exposed to *nix, you'll be right at home with Mac OS X. (FYI - Ubuntu is the Linux distro that focuses on delivering best out-the-box desktop functionality vs. other Linux distros.)

If you into figuring things out (like why doesn't that Video clip play?) any Linux distro will work just fine.

Me - for ANY non-windows based 'puter. I run openSuSE (11) and have a dua-boot thing that allows me to fire up Windows XP if it's necessary (games mostly).

Apple - Get a Mac - Why you'll love a Mac It's now gone from I'm going to get one of these things to "I can't wait to get my hands on one of these things". The more research I do the stronger the argument gets.

But they don't just change the hardware and write a new driver to save a $0.01 either. Dell doesn't care if they use a bunch of components across their product line; as long as it is cheap, they don't care. Apple does, and they would rather write one driver that works and use the same hardware and maximize the performance of it.

You can run Windows on a Mac; Use Boot Camp. Boot to Windows for games and OS X for everything else.
