multi mount/ front receiver

I finished the welding on my multi mount receiver Saturday. I am clamping it to the two frame members going up behind the bumper. It is made out of 1 1/4 inch sch.20 angle. The clamp bars are 1 inch sch.40 angle. Each bar will have four 8mm (13mm wrench size) bolts holding it. Because of the size of the opening in the front bumper I did not use u bolts. The pin is on the out side of the front bumper. The multi mount will have a ring that will slide in the center under the winch. It will share the same pin as the winch. The only reason to pin this I my build some kind of add on bumper in the future. This would allow me to change it out in seconds.

As for the battery I am not going to run two batterys. I am going put red's battery in my lawn mower. I am going to build a battery box and mount it on the right side. I will use a small car battery to power every thing. I ran a Ranger like this four years with no problems. I use to pull my ranger up to the front of my trailer, put wood under the back so it would not tip up and winch junk cars up on the trailer. I used that winch a lot. I still have to get all the steel for the battery box. I don't have any flat stock small enough for this.

I will see if I can get pics posted as soon as I get it primed. My be some time this week.

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

Thanks in advance for posting pictures. Everyone has different ideas that end up with the same result. good stuff! I bought a factory winch mount off of ebay then ended up getting a great deal on a factory winch kit. So if anyone is interested in a unused factory winch mount let me know. I would like to mount the receiver tube to the factory winch mount plate using the fairlead mounts for extra support for the protruding tube.
Need time and... someone to weld it

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

The tube want go through the bumper. That sucks. The hitch tube will but just barely. I did not want to cut or modify the bumper if at all possible. I have welded two peaces on each side that go through the opening in the bumper for the pin. This also allowed me to tighten up the tube so I will have less vibration.

I went with the viper max winch. I just can not justify a Ramsey at this time. I have owened three warns two on a Rhino and will not buy another. I had major problems with all three. The one on the rhino had to be replaced twice because of water getting inside. It also got the cable jamed so bad the last time I tried to use it that I had to cut about 15 feet of cable off of it. And had to walk home and get my bother to come and pull me out. I know most people love warns I just have had very bad luck with them. And I could go on with people I have ridden with getting water in them and not working on like the third and fourth day of a trail ride. My ramsey never let me down and I never had to walk home with it mounted. Just my .02's I also owned two superwinches and never had one of them let me down when it was hooked up. I did get stuck once and had the cables off doing somthing to them. I took a lot of ribbing on that ride.

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

You may end up taking more ribbing unless you remove that last sentence.
If you choose not to remove the sentence, could you tell us the story?

Brand of winch,, while your thought process makes sense, I’ll stick with Warn thank you. But that’s why there’s Chevy, Ford, Honda and Warn

Just having fun here.

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

Ok battery box done! Paint is drying as I type this. That was easyer than I thought it was going to be. Because of it mounting on two side 90 degrees from each other I ended up making it a bit heaver than I had first planed. I mounted it to the two roll bar mounts and braced back to the peace that the dash mounts on. I my go back and mount it on the front inside corner but I don't think it is going to need it.
The ground cable is going to be long enough but the hot cable I am going to have to make a new one. I think I have one I made for a golf cart at work that just might be the right length. I will find out tomorrow night when I get to work. I will get pics posted in the next couple of days. I have to figure out how to post on this site.

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

The easiest way to post pics is to create an account on a photo hosting site like Photobucket and then just paste the link in your reply. PM my if you need help.

I just picked up a new CNC mill. Should be able to start a few projects for my bike now. I have this one at the top of the list.

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

checking pics?

I got the pics figured out I think. The clean part is the battery box. It will have it's car battery in it tonight. My winch came in Friday afternoon but have been working two 12 hour shifts sence then. The angle part that mounts to the roll bar is part of a lawn mower blade. Very hard stuff. I can only drill two holes in it with a new drill bit before it is toast.

Looks good. I think it is even better than the one made by Moose ATV.

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

Looks good. I see you've gotten further than I. I had to cut the sid pan part of the front bumper but I didn't want the receiver tube sticking beyond the front bumper. Someday I may need to drive over a log or something and didn't want to get hung up.

I haven't started the battery box because I'm going to use it as an excuse to buy a press brake from Northern Tools. I've always wanted one.

I also think there's enough room on the drivers side to make a place to mount the winch when not in use. It would need a splash sheild and maybe a cover to protect it.

Are you planning on still using the stock battery or just the car battery? Personally I think just the car battery alone should do almost anything you'll ever want and you can mount your relay for the winch where the stock battery was.

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

Ccobra8, Box looks very nice! As Sfrankland said is looks as good if not better than the moose offering.

Dr. Al said, “Are you planning on still using the stock battery or just the car battery? Personally I think just the car battery alone should do almost anything you'll ever want and you can mount your relay for the winch where the stock battery was.”
I agree with your thought process, a car battery will work great. Get one for a Diesel so the CCA rating will be high.

Suggestion building on what Dr. Al said, it would be great to store the winch on the left side. Think military ammo can would work? I just bought one not to long ago to carry the tie down straps. I will look at it and take a picture. I will have to be cut down but its water tight if you get a good one.

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

The reciever tube does not go throgh the bumper. I welded two ears on for the pin to go through. These ears stick past the skid plate so the pin is on the out side of the bumper. The frame and bumper are not all that square. I had it centered in the frame and when I put the bumper back on tonight it was a 1/4 off to the left in the bumper. I did not leave enough room in all the bolt holes to move it the 1/8 inch it needs so I will be slotting one of the holes in the am.

There is a ton of room under the hood of Red. The winch would fit beside the stock battery box it would fit in front of the one I made also. I am going tto build a storage box for the drivers side.

Stock battery is on the bench and headed for a lawn mower or my ST1300 Honda. I don't think it is big enough for the st1300. The relays are already mounted in the stock battery box. New battery cable is made and on. I have to cut the winch cables and solider the ends on. Going to solider the ones that the factory crimped on too.

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

Not sure if this will be a help to anyone or if this is even what you are talking about, but,...When my Honda dealer was prepping my new BR, I was standing by and watching them and I mentioned that I was always looking for a front mount receiver for my Honda Foreman (which I had just traded in). I wanted the front mount receiver in order to use a hitch/ball so that I could hook up my wheeled aluminum dock for put in and take out as well as launching and dry docking my boats in my lake. I had watched others on my lake put their wheeled docks and boats in easily, with tractors that had front mounted hitch balls. I was never able to find such a set-up for my Foreman. I asked if they knew of or had ever seen anything for the BR, expecting the usual blank stare that I had received when inquiring about my Foreman. The service guy said yes and that he thought he had one in the parts room. A few minutes later he came back with exactly what I wanted. I kept the owners manual and the information I am about to give here I am reading directly from that owners manual. It is made specifically for the BR and is called a UTV 2" Receiver Mount Kit Model Number 18-1010 made by Cycle Country in Spencer, Iowa. The owners manual is dated 11/15/08 so it can't be that old of a part. It says it is part of a 5 piece kit that is purchased to install their UTV Snow Plow. The 5 peice kit consists of my receiver mount kit; model specific attaching hardware kit; universal push tube; a plow blade and a winch to raise and lower the blade. Though I searched their website, I could not find any reference to my particular part as a stand alone. While I did not install it myself (the dealer did) it consists of a heavy welded plate bracket with a 2" receiver tube welded to it and assorted nuts and bolts mounting hardware and it is attached to the BR frame in the area where the skid plate front cover used to be. Attachment seems to be simple u-bolts and an additional bolt on each side. I do not believe any drilling was required. It is described in the owners manual as "The Cycle Country UTV 2" Receiver Mount Kit Model 18-1010 enables the use of Cycle Country UTV Blade System on the Honda Big Red UTV. The mount kit also allows the use of other 2" receiver type hitches and attachments to be used on the front of the vehicle."
My Warn winch was mounted separately just above this part. I also noted that the Cycle Country website shows a receiver winch mount which is a plate on which a winch could be mounted and is ready to be inserted into a receiver tube (model # 25-0060 Universal 2" Receiver Winch Mount). I am not sure if this is what you guys are talking about or have already built, but these things already exist. I suspect that you guys must be talking about something else but perhaps this information will be useful to someone.
I can say that my receiver mount works and looks great for spotting anything from the front with my BR including my dock and boats and looks like it is an OEM type accessory. I leave a hitch/ball on the front and one on the back of my BR ( one being a 1 7/8" ball and one being a 2" ball) when we trail ride and they provide something much easier to hook tow chains, etc. up to to pull someone out of a predicament (have not been in such a predicament myself as of yet - knock on wood). I do not recall the price as that was when I was in the black-out, coma, price shock period of buying my BR and some immediately needed accessories. When regained consciousness, it was already installed and paid for...
Hope this is of some help to someone. It sure met my needs...

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

I have built all my own winch mounts. Multi mounts before any one made such a thing for UTV's. I had winches on KLF300 4x2, KLF300 4X4, KLF400 4X4, 04 Rhino multi mount with a warn 3000#, 05 Ranger multi mount with 3500# Ramsey. Sticker shock paid for my welder. Now I don't get it as often. LOL

Re: multi mount/ front receiver

It looks like it's a 2" receiver for the BR but thier website doesn't show it. It does have the part number under the UTV application chart for the BR but when you click on it the page can't be found. It would have been nice to just buy one instead of making it but it's too late now and I'm sure I saved money.
