Re: which one?

I have a 1998 DR650SE and I rode a several XR. There' s a big difference
between the L and the R venisons. Two different bikes. The XR - R is more powerful, lighter and more of a racing bike. A joy to ride.
The L venison is similar to the DR if just a bit more fun and powerful.

At this time I am very disappointed with the DR and Suzuki. They seem to have this problem with the shaft holder for the starter motor. Of all parting engines I've found, 3 of them had this same problem.
It's a nice bike. The SuperMotard 400cc version would be my choice after the XR-R.

Re: which one?

for commuters they're all right. Light weight compared to sport bikes, and the riding position makes them easier to handle in traffic. They're fun on the dirt too but with limits. If the ride is more than 25-30 minutes you might want to get a better than stock seat. Great mileage. I used to get over 55 mpg. I like the XR better even if it's the L version.
I would seriously recommend you to look into the 400 motard.
In any case, either of those two bikes are fun and very practical. If you're not over 5' 8" you might have problems reaching the ground when stopped.
My wife's 5' 8" and she can barely reach.
Oh, almost forgot, an after market exhaust and some carb jetting is almost a must...
If you get the DR and need parts, let me know, I'm still selling them on e-bay.
Good luck.
