2 Stoke or 4 stroke

Hi everyone Well I am going to be getting into motocross racing. I just wanna know which bike would be better for me to start on. I am looking at a 2002 CR125 or a YZ250F. Any help would be great.

thanks
Michelle

Re: 2 Stoke or 4 stroke

how tall are ya? either can be lowered via link or suspension shop, but the 125 has a lower seat height out of the box.

But, if you're not akin to revving to the moon and using your clutch for power application - the 250f is gonna feel more native. Though it will still need to be in the rev's for power, its not as sensitive as the 125 is to being on the pipe.

You ridden dirt before?

Re: 2 Stoke or 4 stroke

Wanted to answer this quite awhile ago Bikerbabe, but I've been out of the dirtbike scene for too long (as in, they had just recently invented the monoshock ). I think with today's bikes you probably won't go wrong either way. Unless they have changed drastically though, the 4 stroke is probably still a better beginner's bike, what with the usable low end torque and all.

Re: 2 Stoke or 4 stroke

The yz250f is infinitely easier to ride than any two stroke 125. It is faster without being as hard to handle in my opinion.

The 125 class is almost completely dominated by 250 thumpers now, at least at the local level that I race.

The new Honda CRF250 is also worth looking at if you don't want a blue one.

Re: 2 Stoke or 4 stroke

A couple years ago, I thought i would give the motorcross thing a try. I got a used 94 cr125...Good Lord that thing is insane! I never got the hang of the 2 stroke power band. Seems like the power is either on or off...I think a 4 stroke would have been way easier to get the hang of...I could be wrong though....I know one thing though; a cr125 + a motorcross track + not knowing what the hell you are doing = a lot of bruises a big serving of humble pie

I would go with a 4 stroke for the reasons mentioned.

Not "seems like ", it IS either on or off, with the smaller displacement bikes especially.

Re: 2 Stoke or 4 stroke

The 125 will teach you to be a better rider! and you will be a better rider whatever bike you choose to move onto in the future! And in my opinion the two stroke is a hell of a lot more fun to ride

Re: 2 Stoke or 4 stroke

I like 2 strokes better...and the rebuilds will be much cheaper.

Re: 2 Stoke or 4 stroke

go with four stroke. better power. no mixing fuel. even though they're a little more "fun" to rebuild. you get a bit more ride time out of a 4 stroke between rebuilds. like once a season or maybe even 2 seasons on one top end

wow you brought this one back from the dead. 2 strokes are fun, but the 4 strokes are easier to ride but feel heavier
