This one feels/looks like steel, but I didn't test it.

Here it is, Part #2:

But it shows up on previous years' models too.

Re: More Protection

Some people like to leave the cover off so it's easier to clean out the area and because the cover can trap mud. Maybe the new one is a bit different so you can leave the cover off?

Personally I like the cover...it may pack up with mud, but I remember reading in Dirt Bike years ago about a guy losing the tip of his finger in a crash when it got trapped between the chain and CS sprocket. Convinced me.

Re: More Protection

I broke two chains on my 520 last year. Not sure why - one was pretty new and both were well maintained. It happens. One almost hit my buddy in the head.

The only other bike I have broken a chain on was my 1979 KX80.

Jesus! I have always ridden without that cover since I always wear boots. That's the first thing I do to a fresh bike - remove that cover. Maybe I should rethink this policy.

On the other hand, it must've been a nasty get off to end up with your hand down by the CS sprocket.

Re: More Protection

Oh yeah, it must'a been assholes and elbows all over. I've ended up with tiremarks on my chest before and all kinds of crazy stuff, so the 1 in 100,000,000 chance I might lose a digit (and was easily prevented) was enough to convince me.
