Bent Tie Rod- need help
I bent the passenger side tie rod on Big Red yesterday and need to remove it to straighten (or replace). Don't have the shop manual. The outboard end was an easy removal. Can anybody tell me what is involved in removing the inboard end under the big black dust boot. Need to fix it before the owner (my wife
) gets home.TIA, -=T=- |

Re: Bent Tie Rod- need help
I replaced the right front tie rod on my 2009 BR about a year and a half ago. It was stolen recovery and someone ran it up under a tree. If I am not mistaken my local Honda dealership had one in stock and to my surprise it was not expensive. I want to say it was somewhere between $30 - $35. I just took a look at the boot you are referring to and the inner portion, closest to the Stearing Rack, now has a large tie strap. I cannot recall exactly how to remove and replace it but I do remember that it was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. I just jacked the RF up and removed the wheel, cut the inner strap and pulled it back and from there it was a piece of cake. Sorry but I dont remember whats on the inside but its not like replacing a CV joint. The boot is only there to protect the knuckle from dirt. I dont know if it is really worth trying to straighten versus just replacing it with a new one as with most metals, once they are bent out of shape and then back into shape they lose strength and for $35 its just not worth it.
Now that I think of it, and someone correct me if I am wrong, but the inner portion, under the boot, is similar to the outer portion (threaded). Again, it was a lot easier that you think. Here is a link of a diagram and this site sells them for $23.99. Note the knucke under thats inside the boot and the threaded portion on the other side of the knuckle. http://www.partsfish.com/honda_big_r...od_diagram.php Last edited by Hatcher; 11-13-2011 at 1:21 PM. |

Re: Bent Tie Rod- need help
You guys are THE BOMB!
Both with info AND a good raspberry to the head! I deserve it!After posting, I found the partsfish site then realized, "DUH" I already had a copy of the service manual on the shelf. I did take off the wheel and straighten the tie rod such that Big Red can now move in a relatively straight line! However, I have made arrangements with my mechanic friend to replace the tie rod ASAP. Other than putting the boot strap back on (I don't have the tool to do that) looks like something I could do myself. I'm gonna order the parts from the website that sponsors the partsfish online info as it is cool that the info is finally available online and my local dealer is not very nice to his customer (me.) I was clipping along a 20 mile trail in south MS, 8.51 miles from the trailhead and caught a small pine tree with the front passenger tire. Not paying attention enough, I suppose. Was not necessarily trying to set a new trail speed record but was going considerably faster than I had done the first 5 times I rode the trail. Spilled my coke all over the place. ![]() Bent the tire rod as close to 90 degrees as could be done. The A arm or frame or whatever is in front of the tie rod kept it from bending more, acting as a "stop". GPS indicated I was less than 2 miles from the trailhead as the crow flies, but Big Red ain't no crow. Beat up on myself pretty bad for the 2 hours it took to get back. Brutal trip backwards along the trail. Took two hands, working hard, to steer back. Ruts and such made it more difficult, although I did find that taking turns with the drivers side downhill and the passenger wheel up made it a bit easier on unlevel terrain. Everything on the internet lives forever, but I guess I deserve the shame. Thanks again for your responses (some more than others ).You will notice in the attached picture that you can see more of the inside of the tire on the passenger side. -=T=- well, I got the following error trying to upload the 1.28MB .jpg phot "Exceeds your quota by 290.7 KB" If a supermoderator can increase my .jpg limit, he can see the after picture! |
