Maintenance questions.

About to do my first oil and filter change. Besides using Honda brand oil (the dealership wants an arm and a leg per quart), anyone have any suggestions on which brand of oil will work just as well as the Honda brand? Also, what differential oil?

Re: Maintenance questions.

Everyone will try to convince you the oil they use it best BUT as long as it lists this spec on the label its OK to use. You can chose between regular or high end synthetic. All depends on what more important to you, saving a few $ or getting the best oil (synthetic) to protect the engine for years to come.

JASO MA/MA2 is not on the label, do not buy it.

Do not use car oil! I contains additives that can affect your wet clutch operation.

Re: Maintenance questions.

I'm at the point of changing the oil out and the local dealer (that doesn't sell the Big Red nor did he even have any part information) said they use golden spectro platinum oil. I figured since I don't put a lot of hours on the BR I'd spend a little extra, wow $47 for a gallon. They had the Honda synthetic but said they prefer the Spectro. They also make an off road synthetic designed for motocross and high revving motors and has extra additives. I went with the standard synthetic because I didn't want to find out that those extra additives and the auto transmission didn't like each other and I needed to change the $62 worth of oil and filter a second time.

I figure I was going to pay at least $20 or so for synthetic oil and closer to $30 for a good brand. But I still have second thoughts about going with something a little cheaper.

Re: Maintenance questions.

Best not to use full synthetic until the engine is properly run in and the rings have seated in,maybe after 1000 - 1500 miles or so.

Re: Maintenance questions.

On my bikes I use Valvoline ATV 10W-40, It is designed specifically for all terrain vehicles and meet or exceed manufactures warranty requirements. It has extra additives for wet clutch protection and corrosion resistance to help against water. I have used Honda oil but I can get this at the local auto supply and it is cheaper, not telling you what to use but this is what I use and is working for me....
