Re: busted winch cable

I do a tight wrap with electrical tape and cut it with a angle grinder with a fine cut off wheel. Speaking of broken winch cables I noticed mine is in real bad shape as well. I am going to make a temp repair so I can keep plowing snow. I will be ordering some amsteel cable next week.

Re: busted winch cable

I was talked out of the nylon and wish I'd have just gotten it. The steel cable has been a pain in the ass. I have a kink that won't spool out about 7 feet into the spool that frayed when I yanked my suv out of the snow , I'll deal with it when the weather gets better, for now my jimmy rig pulls my plow up and down. I have a grinder so Ill take your advice on that. Any advice on the best way to reattach. I'll check out some clamps at Home Depot tomorrow. For now I just did a square knot in the cable and taped the end.....it works for now.

Re: busted winch cable

We used to use the cables also but break 2 or 3 times a year. So there is little down time we would just tie cable in a knot and keep plowing as is was going to break again anyway. Now use synthetic and no problems yet.

Re: busted winch cable

I wouldn't think plowing would be so hard on the cable

Re: busted winch cable

Very hard on the cable and winch together. Lots of in and out on the controls and the cable is usually making a sharp bend from fairlead the to the blade. My cable is badly frayed right were it goes over the fairlead.

Re: busted winch cable

That makes sense and we get a crapload of snow over here. I'm doing two huge driveways and a portion of the road.
