Roll over tendency?

Took my new Big Red out last evening for its maiden voyage on my VERY mountainous farm. I could not get a feel as to how prone it is going to be to rolling over on side slopes. I have ridden my Kawasaki Prairie over this place over this ground a lot, and it feels more stable that BR. Have any of you rolled your BR, and how much effort did it take? I know that is subjective, but give it a shot.
Thanks.

Re: Roll over tendency?

I have been in a few steep grades and have found when the four tires are on the ground everything feels fine. But as soon as a tire leaves the ground (3 wheeling) then it can get pretty hairy if you are off camber. That said I have never rolled but did have a bit of a time when rock crawling that left me thanking a few friends.

Re: Roll over tendency?

Stock tires/wheels BR feels very stable to me. With the new tires I do feel a difference feeling top heavy. That said my off camber moments aew few and far between in Florida. Maybe thats why the 25 inch tires are a bit smaller.

Re: Roll over tendency?

I was hoping to puit taller tires on for more ground (log ) clearance but don't see how that will work on the steepsideslopes.
Thanks for your input.

Re: Roll over tendency?

Sfrankland and I both have our sway bars disconnected. It has been posted that you get better traction with the sway bar off. Keeping the bar connected would help in off camber situations.
What kind of hill grades are we speaking of here?

Re: Roll over tendency?

Funny I have found the opposite. I found since I have removed the sway bar that the off camber riding is a lot more stable because the suspension has more ability to flex. I know in the off-road automotive world this is also the case.

Re: Roll over tendency?

I have 20* to 60* sloped open fields running to the woods edge and above. No problem, obviously, going straight up or down(I do wish the BR had an engine brake or lower range), but I must traverse these fields frquently for work and hunting. I guess what I'll do is try going anywhere I would go on my tractor.

Re: Roll over tendency?

I think the BR may have an engine cut off if it leans sideways too far. I was playing around on some flat ground that had some dirt piles and got it much closer that I expected to rolling. I think I might have except I was alone and I was on the high side. Since I was going reletively slowly it would have been more of an ego brusing than anything else but the engine just cut out and I quickly started rolling backwards(maybe an inch or two) to less of an angle and it came to life. It was so quick that the engine didn't stop turning so it came back to life in less than a second.

I was at a real steep angle, one of those ones were the back tire is off the ground by a couple of feet or more. The engine felt like I just turned the key off. no responce what so ever. I was temped to try it again but I was real close to seeing just how hard it is to roll the BR back onto it's wheels and of course I was jst puttering so I didn't have a hemit or the seat belt on.

So has anyone ever had this happen to them or put the BR onto it's side?

Re: Roll over tendency?

Now, Dr. Al, surely you will be our test pilot and do that again and report back.Ha! Do you mean two feet up on the dirt? That is not very high?? maybe 30 degree slope? I'm with you, I do not want to wear that 1400 pounds.

Re: Roll over tendency?

there is a swampy area near where i live. Right now its dry, one good storm and it starts to fill wit water. Not sure of some of the angles but I will take pictures for posting and "try" and remember to take my angle finder.
Just got a "Flip" video for work so maybe I will shoot video instead.
I was a nice ride tonight, cooling off down here a bit. More on Monday

Re: Roll over tendency?

The back tire was off of the dirt pile by about 2 feet or so, but that was off of the dirt pile, it may have been a foot or so high where the rear tire was. I really didn't pay too much attention. I may have to do some experimenting. If I can find a way to get straps on it I can use the front bucket of the back hoe to slowly roll it on it's side without letting it go all the way and see if the engine cuts out.
