Rims and Tires

Does anyone know if you can put 14 inch rims and 27 inch tires on the Big Red without having to lift it and without rubbing during normal use?? What is the biggest rim / tire combo you can use without lifting it?? Thanks in advance for the replies.

Re: Rims and Tires

You may have to trim the lower corner of the front fender but I am not a 100% sure. I know with a 1" or 2" lift there are no issues at all. Several people are even running bigger tires with 3" lift with no issues.

What are you looking at going with?

Re: Rims and Tires

I have 1 1/2" spring spacers on the front of mine and a 2" lift with 1 1/2" spring spacers and I'm running 30" mudzillas on it and the only time it will rub anything is if I got the front wheels turned all the way and hit a pretty good bump and then it doesn't even rub that much

Re: Rims and Tires

Looking to run 14 inch rims with 27 inch tires and wondering if it will require a lift and if so, how much? really looking for the biggest rim / tire combo without having to lift the machine and / or causing rubbing issues with normal use. Thanks for the input.

Wow Extremer, 30" tires on a big red. I was worried about 27" so was thinking of going to 26" tire on mine as climbing steep hills or in wet snow I didn't think it would be able to pull such a big tire. Did you do anything for more power or lower gearing?

Re: Rims and Tires

OFRCboy,

Did you have to put lift on the BR to get the 27s under it. And are you running 14 inch rims?? If you went with a lift kit.....which one and do you like it? Do you notice any difference in performance with the 27s?? Low end power still OK? Thanks in advance for the reply.

Re: Rims and Tires

Don’t forget offset, hey xtremerancher02 did you change the offset on your wheels (say one inch further out)?

Re: Rims and Tires

No I didn't mess with the offset on the front at all right now I'm running some sra rims off my 300 but the front has the same offset just the rear sticks out alil bit and as for power and gearing I haven't done anything to it yet but I haven't got to put many miles of trail riding on it but have taken it out once and it turned the 30's in about 20" of mud and water like no bodys buisness but I'll be able to tell you what it'll do on steep hills after this weekend I'm going test it out

Re: Rims and Tires

Yes... you can go with the 14" rims, I have 27x9Rx14 tires on 14" wheels. You will experience some rubbing if you go down a very steep grade and turn sharp, or when you hit a hard bump with a 200 lb. passenger; however, if you go with the heavy springs, it will not rub and will handle better: Big Red Pictures :: Front Shocks picture by dwfleming1 - Photobucket
you can get the shocks for a little over $100 at: High Lifter Lift Springs - Honda 700 BIG RED 2009 - Front or Rear Spring Kit BTW, one added advantage of the oversize wheels and tires is that you will pick up about 5 miler per hour of speed... about 45.

I really like the look of the rear tires and rims but the front looks to narrow for the size of the bike. I had 9" wide tires on front and found that they sank or dug into soft surfaces. When I switched to wider 12" tires in front it was a lot better. Another issue with the different offset front and rear is if you run the same width tires front and rear you will have one end wider than the other. Again this is not an issue if you are running on harder surfaces and running different width tires front and rear.

Re: Rims and Tires

I have 28.5 Dominators, 10" wide all for corners, has rubbed twice in just over 200 miles, but just barely. Friend of mine has 27x9x12 front, 27x12x12 on rear, compared to mine his feels like power steering, thats my only regret, I have a 2 inch lift kit on mine.

Re: Rims and Tires

I still have the stock tires on my 09 BR but did change out the rims with ones that are offset. It looks to be around 2 inches on each side but I am guessing. Personally, I like the look of a wider stance and thought the stock wheels being completely under the body just did not look right. I have not yet added a lift but will put a 2 inch one on soon as it has, on some occasions, rubbed when the front is compressed while turning. They rub on the outer portion of the plastic part that protrudes from the floor board of the drivers area. Hopefully the lift helps. Had many plans for BR this summer but just did not get to any of them.

I pulled them off the first week I had my BR. Does $400 plus shipping sound fair?
