Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

Question for those of you in non-snowed in states:

Is the dust that comes from the front tires on the Big Red really bad behind the cab or in the cab?

Several people have mentioned this on here and am interested to know what you were able to do to stop it if anything?

I am interested in a 2nd row seat in the bed but don't want to choke out the extra passengers.

Does a windshield help? Rear curtain, etc.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

I’m in a non-snow state and the dust we kick is not the same as up north. However I have no windshield, no doors and I took off those nets. Dust stays below the belt line of the machine for me.

I have the full windshield, hard roof and the rear window. Mine sucks full of dust in the dusty half of the year.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

We have a full windshield, hardtop and full back cab cover and dust is intense in rear box. Carry my miniature english bulldog with us in a carrier in back and dust was a concern for him. Actually, dust is pretty intense in the cab as well. I would not want to be a passenger in the box in back!!!

I am trying some things with mud flaps and different things and hope to improve the problem. If I do I will post.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

I do have a windshield and and a back window but there is 12" of open area below the window and above the bed in the rear. By opening my vents below the windshield it helps and the breeze feels good but dust is still bad. My mud flaps on the rear below the bed showed no improvement with the dust. I am now thinking the problem is with the doors as My BR and a friends Rhino are by far the worst for dust and they both have 1/2 doors. Last ride we opened mine when riding and most of the dust blew out of the cab area. I will remove them before next trip for a better test and report back.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

I have noticed that all of us with windshields have dust problems. I mention this because a relative of mine has a Kawasaki S x S as does a number of his friends and he mentioned that they are beginning to conclude that those with windshields have the same dust problem as we see with BR and those without don't seem to have it nearly as bad. Even if this is true, it doesn't offer much of a solution. I have the 3/4 1/4 split windshield and on last weekends' trail ride on extremely dusty roads, we ran a small test of opening the windshield for increased air flow. Dust situation was marginally improved. To those who do not run with a windshield on their BR, do you have the same excessive dust situation?
It does seem like all I do is complain about my BR on this forum but that is not really true as I am extremely happy with it and wouldn't trade it for anything...

Speaking for myself only, unless someone is obviously bitching I take most statements as constructive. If we all learn from one another’s issues and concerns we can make the ownership experience better.
Also less trial and error

That said enjoy the bugs in your teeth and less dust this summer with no windshield!

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

I'm new here and am enjoying my Big Red so far.

I put some info about dust on the 'rear view mirror' thread, but thought it would be more appropriate here.

My Big Red came with a windshield already installed. (I bought a very slightly used '09 model) Being plexiglass, it was already scratched enough to cause a huge glare problem when driving into the sun so I took it off until I could replace it. To my surprise it almost completely cured the dust problem. The windshield creates a vortex behind it that sucks everything right into the cab. I figured that was part of the problem, but it cut the dust down about 99%! I doubt I'll be putting another windshield on it now.

I live in Arizona so we don't have the weather problems some of you guys might encounter. We certainly have cold and rain in the mountains where I spend a fair amount of time - especially in the summer - but dust is a much bigger problem. BTW, I do have the doors on - I would be interested to know if removing them makes a difference.

Also wondering if the windshield that allows you to adjust it for more airflow helps with the dust?? I can see the need for a windshield occasionally, but not sure the adjustable model allows enough airflow to keep the dust at bay.

Appreciate the help.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

I have the fabric rear window and it is really hard to keep clean is not the best for seeing out through. Because it is on the back I don't care so much but to have it on the front I would sooner get wet then have to drive with it in place.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

We also have the roll-up rear window. Can't imagne trying to look through that as a front windshield...
We also have the 3/4 - 1/4 split windshield from Honda. We have noticed a marginal difference in dust with the windshield opened and the rear window in place. We are going trail riding this weekend on a trail that is sure to be extra dusty due to our extremely dry weather of late. We plan to experiment by removing windshield and rear window cover and compare dust issues to previous rides. With windshield and rear window in, at the end of a 40 mile ride, we are completely covered in dust that rises like a PigPen (Charlie Brown character) cloud when we get off of the BR. It is so bad that I am sure some would consider it to be a health issue if done repeatedly.
Will report next week of our findings...
Of course, even though it has not rained here in the Wisconsin Northwoods in two months, with the windshield and rear window removed, it will insure that during our ride we will encounter the mother of all rainstorms!

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

Been dry here also for the past month. Washed my car and poof it rained within the hour. Not even in the forecast

And thanks much for the feedback on the roll up winshield gents, I'll just get wet/cold or both when the weather turns. I'll just continue to pack the bike rain suit to keep the rain gods at bay

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

We have had a month of rain and the dust is not an issue. I mostly notice it latter in the summer but for 10 months of the year it is a none issue. Now windshield wipers are a must.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

OK I have a glass windshield (homemade) and had the top 1/2 of the back enclosed with a window. The front below the windshield I have vent holes to allow for cool air to flow into the cab area.. Dust was very very bad. Last trip I enclosed the bottom 1/2 of the cab area behind the seats. This kept about 75-80% of the dust out of the cab area. Makes riding in the dust fun again.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

Going over the same dustry trail as last weekend, we removed the windshield and the soft curtain rear window. Rode a total of 90 miles. Dust was marginally better in cab and rear box. Temps were in the 90's so the air felt good but there is no way we would consider a windowless BR a dramatic improvement in dust. We were the lead vehicle so eating someone elses dust was not the issue. It did seem to create less dust behind us as the bike following us tried to stay in a relatively dust free pocket immediately behind our vehicle.
I even have a bit of a sore throat today.
At 45 miles, we could only be seen by the whites of out eyes...
Is it possible the roof is creating the problem..I expect to and am used to getting dirty trail riding, but this is almost unpleasant. Next trip may require a respirator

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

I had a dusty run this weekend as well. I did have a full windshield and rear curtain on and found the ride was very good when leading. In the rear I found that the wipers I have on the bike need to be redesigned so they wipe both the inside and outside at the same time.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

I'm a little confused now. We just got back from the maiden voyage of the Big Red on a camping trip to northern AZ.

I removed the windshield a few weeks ago and all I have, other than stock, is a flat roof over the front seats (alum. diamond plate) and a rear seat for my twin boys.

We were in talcum powder dust most of the time, and also on a very dusty graded FS road. Speeds up to 30 mph or so.

The amount of dust on all occupants was near zero. I commented to my wife that there was very little dust and she said "I didn't notice any at all". The boys in the back seat had no dust on them after 2 hours of riding. The only time we ever got 'dusted' was when we stopped on a particularly dusty section of road, or another vehicle passed in the opposite direction.

Maybe I'm just lucky, or the exact set-up of mine is just different enough to prevent the dust getting sucked inside.

The only addition I plan on is a halo cage with a top over the rear seat. I hope that doesn't change the air flow enough to cause a problem...

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

I have removed the fabric window on the rear of my bike and just left he hard roof and full one piece windshield in place. I have had several runs on the bike and have noted a lot less dust in the cabin. That said I am still getting full of dust but no were near as much as before. The breeze is also nice on those warmer days. Next I will be to make some quick connect brackets so I can pop the front window in and out. I am sure this would make another big difference.

Re: Rear dust really bad on Big Red?

Here is a possible solution to your dust problems; it has worked very well for me. First, you will need to have both the front and rear windshields from Honda or something very similar. Next, you will need to open the front windshield releases so that you can put two longer braces (11.5 inches) in place. This will create an airflow that will keep out the dust and provide a cooler riding experience. Sorry, this provides no help for anybody in the back. By the way, keep the back windshield closed!
