Flat deck for the Big Red

I have had this idea in my head for a while now and since we have been getting all this rain and freezing rain I took the box of the bike and made some measurements. The deck would be about 6" longer than the current box and the same width.

Anyway here are a few pics of the box off the bike and the cad drawings of what I am planning on building. I won't be doing much more until I have a rear bench seat. Also while I had the box off I painted the exhaust with some high temp black paint and totally removed the rear sway bar that I had disconnected but had left in place.

Re: Flat deck for the Big Red

Sfrandland,

If you get it made it will be sweet! We are thinking of the second row option on a Big Red as well.

Do have few questions:

Will your tilt bed still work? If not, you'll have to remove it each time to get to your airbox.

Will the second seat be easily removed? This way you can use the bed for other things when needed.

What do you expect the costs to be? Materials, the second seat, seat belts, etc.

How heavy to you think it will be?

Metal or aluminum or combination of both?

I believe it was you that said "Custom parts require photos!"

No the tilt box will not work but I will have an acces panel that can be opened to get at the airbox.

I had planned on running it with just the seat installed and if I need the box then switch back. I pretty much just use the bike for play and have a trailer for work when I need it.

I am thinking around $300 for the frame but that could change the more I add to it. The seat will be either one I have out of a Jeep or an after market one for a UTV depending on funds.

A little more than the stock box which was surprisingly heavy for a plastic box. It had a lot more steel framing than I first thought.

Metal frame will be 2"x3"x1/8". The panels will most likely be either sheet metal or aluminum panels.

I did but thankfully I also stated that I will be a few weeks before I am ready to start.

Re: Flat deck for the Big Red

Ok, now I'm interested. We, like I said, are thinking of the 2nd row seat but being in Alaska the cost of getting a 2nd seat system here is going to be astonomical! I figuer $1000 for the system and $1000 for the shipping! Not sure I like that option.

I also really want to be able to use the tilt box if need be. I don't intend to use it for hunting, have my awesomely set up Honda Rincon for that, but if I do use it it would be nice to have the tilt bed if needed.

Also, I want a system that will allow me to remive the 2nd seat with ease for the same reasons.

I'm not much of a builder, have welder, can't weld. Was given the welder by the old man but never learned to use it. Sad I know. Don't have any way of bending/cutting metal or aluminum, oh welder won't do aluminum either.

We have been looking at 2nd row systems and like the UTV Crap add-on and the MTW Perfomance systems but again the cost of shipping is MURDER. I don't know what we will do yet but enjoying looking at everyone elses ideas and your's is really interesting!

Re: Flat deck for the Big Red

SFrankland,

Could I beg, barrow or steal a picture or two of the underside of your Big Red Box, since you have it off?

Still thinking also of the 2nd row seat option like you.

Thanks, if you still have it off.

Re: Flat deck for the Big Red

Sorry but I put it back on once I got my measurements. Won't be back off for a few months.

Well, fine be that way.

No issues, was just wondering.
