Home made snow plow

Started out with a $50 blade off the classifieds and $100 worth of square stock. I still need to mount the springs but it works way better than I figured it would. The bike can make a 74" cut through 12" of snow and still scrape the ice of the driveway in one pass. It pushes snow more like a truck rather than an atv but then again it is 1900Lbs with me and all the gear on it.

Blade was only 50" wide so I had to add 24" to it to make it wider than the bike.

First test plow.

Version 2 had a redesigned arm and I figured out how I was going to angle the blade.

Re: Home made snow plow

Finished push tube is over 9' long. Hit everything with gloss black paint to keep the snow from sticking to it.

Re: Home made snow plow

How much does it cause the front end to droop when its on?

Does it make it tough to steer, "heavy" on the front end?

I've got one on a ranger, and it's really sluggish with the blade.

It will push snow like a mother though.

Re: Home made snow plow

It will pull the front end down maybe 1 1/2" and the steering I haven't noticed a big difference. I usally push with the front dif locked so it adds to the sterrng effort anyway. With that said I don't find it bad at all for the effort it takes to clear the driveway.

Re: Home made snow plow

SInce I bough the tracks for the bike I had to change the push tube so that it would clear the front tracks.

Pulled the old tubes off and noticed that they had seen better days. 1/8" wall tube doesn't hold up well to the Big Red's weight and the force it exerts on the tube.

Here you can seen how the tube is bent upwards by an inch.

Also the bolt hole that allowed the blade to angle had started to crack in the welds.

It didn't help that I didn't sleeve the hole

So what is a guy to do but make a new push tube out of 1/4" walled tube.

And this time in greatly increased the strength of the pivot hole by placing it in the center of a tube and sleeving it for added strength.

And the nearly finished tubes installed on the bike for final adjustments before finish welding.

And the finished tubes.

With the blade lifted to full height I get 35" of clearence at the blade.

And a full 12.5" of clearance at the blades lowest point. That is even more clearance then I get with a 2" lift and 26" tires.

Blade straight and full height. It will never be at this height but it would be handy if I want to drive over something and need a high approach angle.

And at full angle it more than clears the tracks.

Blade angled and at normal ride height. Still has lots of clearence on the low side.

Now all I need is a fresh coat of paint and a good heavy snow fall to test it all out.

Re: Home made snow plow

the plow looks good and seems very functional. your BR is really cool looking on tracks. after watching the video i see why you got them.

i admire anyone that has the desire and knowledge to build something themselves. i will build things even if it costs a little bit more. i get to acquire more tools and have tons of satisfaction. not that you need my thumbs up, but congrats!

Re: Home made snow plow

I had the wifes blessing to speed $800 on a blade, but for $350 I bought the scrap blade, steel and a metal abrasive wheel chopsaw and built my own. I just enjoy the time I get to spend out in the shop. The tracks are very cool to use I get a lot of people slowing down for a look when they drive by.
