Re: big red oil filter change

Not to hijack this thread but do you wax as well. I am only asking because I drive in some pretty stick mud and was wondering if a coat of wax would make cleaning any easier.

Re: big red oil filter change

After everything is powerwashed I go over all of the plastic with Endust. This is not truly a wax but more of a cleaner and polisher. It is relatively inexpensive and does the best job of leaving all of the plastic looking like new while not acting like a dust magnet as does using ArmourAll and allows dirt and mud to come off easily. Pledge, which is a wax, makes it look great but attracts dust immediately. Tire Dressing probably works the best making the plastic (especially the black) look like new but is relatively expensive. I only do this when BR is going to be in pictures.
I suppose mentioning that using a new package of old fashioned cotton baby diapers as the polishing rags might be considered to be going over the top!!!However, compared to my ritual in cleaning and detailing my Harleys, I feel guilty in the reduced effort I put into my BR...

Rincon is the only other ATV to use this engine, 675cc often referred to as 680cc.

I have an 06 Rincon FI. I use a Wix 24938 oil filer and AMSOIL 10W-30 Motor Cycle oil, now over 2,000 and never had to top of the oil. Change oil every fall, usually about 500 miles and about 25 hrs of use during the summer, not any use in winter.

The trans shifts just like a car.

For power Big Red uses a slightly massaged version of the Rincon ATV powertrain that features a 675cc fuel injected four-valve engine. This motor feeds power to the ground through a shaft drive design (no belts are used) and a three-gear automatic transmission. It has a 2WD and an AWD setting – with the AWD locking the differentials when it detects slippage.

Not to confuse anyone but according to Wix, the 57938 is the replacement for the Honda Big Red UTV. As near as I can tell, the filter media and outside dimensions are slightly larger than the 24938. They very well may be interchangeable, I make no opinion one way or the other.

Re: big red oil filter change

I checked that out, you are right. I came up with the 24938 by using the Honda part number and cross referencing to Wix. I did that back in 2005 (my 05 Rancher AT400 uses same) and have used the 24938 ever since, 5 of them to be exact.

I ordered some 57938 from my distribution center to have on hand in the shop.

The 24938 is listed for Honda M/C.

Re: big red oil filter change

Hours, every 50 or 1 year whichever comes first. From late Nov to April I park it. Lots of snow and nowhere to ride it in winter.

IMO mileage is not always the best guide to use in small engines, hours is a better indication of usage.

I use good oil, Amsoil synthetic. I have always used synthetics in everything I own for many years...

Re: big red oil filter change

I got both a 24938 and a 57938 in front of me. Very hard to tell any difference in size. The filters appear identical in every respect BUT the big difference is in the supplied "O" rings. The small one is the same BUT the large ones are off different diameters. The large one fits on the covers and some models must have a different cover. Btw - The 57938 is more the 2x the price of the 24938, why I have no idea?

The 24839 one is larger in diameter than the 57938, almost 2x as large.

Re: big red oil filter change

I have bought the Honda filters the last two times I have changed the oil. Neither time did I change an O-ring or did one come with the filter. Is it something I should be changing at each oil change?

Re: big red oil filter change

I have never changed the "O" rings in 10 yrs. Never had any leaks, Honda filters do not come with them nor do any brands that I am aware of so it not necessary if they do not leak.

Btw - It may appear in the pic that they 57938 has more pleats but it does not. If I turn it around it would look the same. I am convinced the only difference in the "O" rings. Other filter manufacturers call for the same filter for both but none of them include the "O" rings. Why Wix has chosen to do that is beyond me.

FYI - Both filters are made in the Filtron plant in Poland

Re: big red oil filter change

After my last BR oil/filter change, I purchased an extra set of the two o-rings involved and one of the filter springs. At the time of my last oil change, we dropped the spring and it fell into the undercarriage where it took two of us over an hour to find. This experience and one in the past where an o-ring on my Foreman somehow ended up with a nick in it led me to have this extra set around just in case.

Re: big red oil filter change

Good point olivecrossbones, better to be safe than sorry. I have to make a trip to the dealer soon so I guess I can add o-rings to the list.

I called WIX and asked what the differences were and they said they would get back to me. I found on this web site: http://www.cmsnl.com/products/15412-kea-003-element_15412413005/ reference that Honda Part number 15412413006 is superseded by 15412KEA003. The latter being the Honda part number for the Big Red. For you Amsoil folks, look up the cross reference for the above Honda numbers and you will find 24938 and 57938 respectively. So far the only difference we know of between the two WIX filters: as pointed out by Z15, is the thickness of the large “O” ring. FYI (0.180" vs 0.098"). The next time I change my oil I am going to compare the Honda Filter and the existing “O” ring with both WIX filters. As for which filter to use, if in doubt use the OEM from Honda, I believe they cost about $13. As for myself, I will use either of the WIX Filters I have on hand and I have both. If WIX calls me back I’ll pass it on.
