Radar Detector Power Connection???

I've fabricated a new bracket for the radar detector and now need to make the electrical hookup. BTW my new bike is an '05 CBR1000RR.
Where is a good, convenient place to tap off battery power (+12V and ground) connections?

Thanks, llhank

I used to wire my Valentine directly to the battery.

Re: Radar Detector Power Connection???

Me too. I don't like the idea of tapping into the stock wiring, so I always run my stuff straight to the battery (with an inline fuse).

I used to do this, then got lazy and just used the headlight connector, then you need less wire, and it shuts off with the ignition (although sometimes it is nice to "see" the cops coming whilst you are chillin off the bike)

The detector draws only a tiny amount of current, so the head light fuses are more than enough to accomodate a few more mAs.

The head up display from Hard????, is an awesome/safe addition to thsi set up.

Enjoy

I totally agree with Trackho. I've got the system in each of my helmets and love it because 1) I'm half deaf and 2) I have to wear ear plugs when I ride because I don't want to become twice #1.

Re: Radar Detector Power Connection???

I had the H.A.R.D. unit and sold it. I didn't like taking my eyes off the road to see the signal strength on my V1. I prefer to listen to the auduble warnings of the detector to gauge distance and threat.

Ditto on the headlight, or some other thick, switched wire.

Re: Radar Detector Power Connection???

I just installed one today. Wired it into a running light so it would work with the ignition. Ran the ground direct to the battery.

Are you refering to the running light/blinker? What happens when you turn the blinker on?

Re: Radar Detector Power Connection???

The Valentine comes with two cords...a direct wire and a cigarette plug connection. If you don't need the cig plug, just cut it off and direct wire it to the battery.

Top of master cylinder with velcro tape ... just perfect for my need. Wiring goes under the gas tank. I used powerlet 48".

Hey Murphy;

Just curious, why did you trash the cruisader?

I know from previous experience with remote install car units that Whistlers are crap, but it's the only one that has a nice stelth install for a bike.
I was thinking of trying one (against my better judgement) and would be interested in your experience.

Re: Radar Detector Power Connection???

Abody can make any suggestions on how to mount the physical unit? Short of ordering from limitied selection of brackets on stemstand.com are there any nifty ways to make the unit sit securely and without obstructing the control panel? All ideas, links, pics are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
